What Are Your Foods Made Of?

I have this general rule of thumb that the foods you choose should be as unprocessed or natural as possible. I don’t even want to know what Little Debbies Cakes or Pop Tarts are made of that gives them a shelf life of three years! Most processed food lasts forever in your cupboards. I don’t know about you, but that raises some concern me and my family. However, I am glad I don’t have to personally be concerned because I don’t eat it and I hope you are doing the same. The more a certain food has been processed, the worse it is for you, period. My first recomendation is to read food labels. When you’re at the grocery store shopping for you and your family, avoid most items with a long ingredient list you can’t read or pronounce. It certainly narrows down all the confusion with so many options to choose from. If you don’t know what’s in it, don’t buy it! I try to buy produce, natural unprocessed foods and items with very short ingredient lists.

Let’s take a look at one popular breakfast item that makes for a perfect example. Many of us think Oatmeal is the ideal breakfast food. But take a look at all the different Oatmeal options at your local store. The first is Oatmeal, Steel Cut or Regular Whole Oats, without any additions. Simply one ingredient.  Now consider the alternatives in a few of the different brands of Oatmeal. The majority of the flavored oatmeal, especially the packets, often contains additives and lots of sugar. These items appear to be healthy and convenient, right?  They offer the same nutritional value as the whole or unprocessed oats don’t they?  NO!!!  Like in most areas of life, the easiest way isn’t always the best way. This simple choice could be derailing your nutrition plan as well as your hard work in the gym with your first food choice of the day. Other items down the grocery ailes to be very cautious of when purchasing: Popcorn, Peanut Butter, Cereals, Yogurts and MORE! So, the takeaway, spend the time to get to know what your foods are made of. You may be surprised at how much better you feel and look with just a few subtle changes.

 

HEALTHY BREAKFAST SUGGESTION: Blend either oatmeal, steel cut oats or regular whole oats with a small hand full of mixed berries and 1 scoop of either PRO5 Protein Powder (vanilla), PRO7EIN Synthesis Protein Powder (vanilla) or FORZA PRO Protein Powder (vanilla) and hot water.
